Tango Lesson [VHS]

Tango Lesson [VHS]

Sally Potter's self-reflective film stars Potter (an actress and the director of Orlando), more or less as herself, learning to tango from master dancer Pablo Veron and considering making a film called The Tango Lesson. The film that we happen to be watching, however, is concerned largely with the delicious conflict between the politics of tango--the need for one partner, typically the woman, to yield to the other--and the expectations of the filmmaker to do things on her own terms. Can Potter simultaneously surrender and control for the duration of this circular project? The question is made more complicated by Veron's desire to be in one of Potter's films--in other words, to follow her lead. Potter may not be Veron's equal on the dance floor, but that isn't the point of this interesting movie and its provocative, internal debate. --Tom Keogh

As A Lark

As A Lark

Letter No. 1
‘Y’ came before ‘Z’ for a reason, but not one that I am aware of.
The same as I tried to figure out why you had to come to me
before I was ready. I wonder, if I might have been a better person,
an older person, a different person, would you still be around here
some place? Either way, I’m sorry you’re not. Then again I think,
maybe for your sake, it’s better that you are gone now.
I guess all I meant to say was that I miss you.
So…I miss you.

Once, my mother called the cops on me. She hissed in my ear as I watched the car pull up into the parking lot. The image of the interior of my stomach was black tar ready to be laid to bubble on a highway. The store manager was looking sidelong at me, the bottle of liquid base makeup hanging loosely from his fingers.
“This will teach you to steal,” was what Mom was whispering to me. Her hands were ropes that bound me to a single position, facing the door so that I could not miss the chill when the police would enter. The cashier was the only other person in the whole store. She was shocked. I knew because of her hands. I knew about hands. Her hands were held in the air. She had forgotten that she had been counting quarters. Hands were the first step in body language. I preferred looking at them opposed to eyes.
The air had left the building. I was eye level with the hip bone the officer. I was looking directly into his belt.
“Officer, this child was caught shoplifting.” There was a tinkling of delight in her voice. She was so unforgiving with those words.
“Did you place the call, ma’am?”
“Yes. Yes, I did.” She was ready to defend herself already, ready for the man to call her bad parent. She knew it must be coming.
“Are you of relation to the party?” His blue uniform was too big for his upper body. It was puffed out like a risen loaf of bread.
“I am her mother.” Her weight shifted. She corrected her hair with a twitch of her head.
“Oh.” His voice dropped, as did Mom’s. I don’t think it’s exactly policy to bring a child this young in for a crime like this. Sir, do you have a problem with this?” The cop turned toward the miserable store manager. The manager did not speak, but there was a rustle of clothing as he shrugged nervously.
That was it, besides the sigh of course. The cop gave a great huge sigh as my shoulders were freed. It did not save me from anything though, and it was the first time I wondered why a conscience had no control over the world’s rules. The lights flashed without sound, and that was the way in which I greeted them. I had no heartbeat.

I was aware that I had been tricked into this relationship. I realized soon that the boy was empty, all black holes and deep caves, besides all the words he had. Empty in the way that the streets had been, the day that my mom called the police for me the first time. As the officer had driven me around the block, he glanced back in the rear-view mirror. Gave me sorry eyes. I gave them back. I must have been radiating fear from every single one of my pores.
“Where do you live?” He asked me. I gave him an automatic answer; the address had been drilled into my memory by my kindergarten teacher. We drove past the police station but did not stop there. My eyes were held open by pins, and it was burning. He dropped me off half an hour. Walked me to the door. Exchanged a few words with my mother. When the door closed, I was still standing on the mat, staring up at my mother. She looked down at me. I was only six years old, but I wondered what she could possibly be thinking.
“Hope that taught you a lesson,” she told me. Her voice shook.
But years and years after that incident, and after more like that, when I was sixteen years old, I referred back to it while thinking about him. Like I had wondered about my mother, I wondered about him. What the hell was he thinking? He reeled me in with those words, and then left me high and dry. So I realized that I had been tricked.
